In a significant development in the field of school education reform, educationist Ashok Thakur met with Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, School Education and Literacy, under the Ministry of Education (Government of India), to present the innovative “Muni EDUCATION Model” aimed at addressing the national and global challenge of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN).
During the meeting, a detailed presentation and consultation session was held focusing on how the Muni EDUCATION Model can effectively strengthen FLN outcomes across schools in India. The model emphasizes a holistic approach that goes beyond conventional literacy benchmarks and integrates deeper learning processes rooted in comprehensive human development.
According to sources present at the meeting, Dr. Sanjay Kumar expressed keen interest and appreciation for the model. He was reportedly both “astonished and enthusiastic” about its potential impact on foundational education. Demonstrating immediate responsiveness, he directed senior officials from his department—including representatives associated with NCERT and the CBSE—to visit Muni International School for an in-depth understanding of the model.
The objective of the proposed visit is to assess the feasibility of selectively implementing the Muni Model, with the possibility of scaling it nationwide based on outcomes and adaptability.
Importantly, the discussions highlighted that the challenge of FLN is not limited to India but is a global concern affecting education systems worldwide. The Muni EDUCATION Model was presented as a potential comprehensive solution to this widespread issue, offering an approach that integrates literacy with deeper educational and human values.
The consultation also underscored a critical philosophical standpoint: while global standards often equate literacy with education, experts emphasized that literacy alone constitutes only a partial dimension of true education. The Muni Model seeks to bridge this gap by aligning foundational learning with broader human development.
